New System for Entering Competitions 2012
Good day to my fellow RPS members.
As you will be aware from Steven’s talk at the last club night, we have a new system for entering RPS competitions.
We have set up a web based system on our web site that will allow you to enter all our normal competitions. This hopefully will result in a easier way to enter than in the past, as the spread sheet is no longer required and also you don’t have to worry about following the correct naming conventions.
Follow this link for a pdf with full instructions. RPS Competition Entry Form Instructions
But in simple terms; to enter a competition now:
Have your images ready and resized to 1024 pixels on the long side, and jpg.
Go to our web site
Log into the Blog
Got to the Competitions Tab
Click on the Competition Form
Fill out the form and submit
That’s it!
Have fun and feel free to ask me for any help if you need it. The hardest part will be remembering your password!

1st Competition – B&W – Theme ‘People’
There may be some people seeking clarification re the theme for the first competition so in an effort to alleviate some brain strain here is how the competition will be interpreted.
The primary theme is black and white. The ‘People’ side of it is left up to the members to interpret as they see fit. This may be individuals or groups. The judge will be asked to judge firstly on the Black & White theme and secondarily on the ‘People’ aspect. Obviously you can be as creative as you wish!.
Hope this helps.

If you are interested in AV’s but don’t feel quite ready to enter the Jack Sprosen Memorial Trophy consider entering into the Tauranga Club competition about May next year.
I will send out more info as it comes to hand,

The theme for the October – November informal online competition is ABSTRACT.
The competition will be judged at the end of November.
Let’s get creative!
This is the last informal comp for the year.
To enter just go to the Gallery for INFORMAL online competitions and up load your single entry.
Best Field Trip and PIPY
Hi fellow photographers.
This is just a note to enlighten everyone about the two competitions closing on November 2nd.
These being “Best Field Trip” and “PIPY”
Firstly the Best Field Trip comp.
The subject is OPEN and the images must have been taken during an RPS field trip in the 12 months preceding the competition closing date.
The number of entries allowed for this competition is now the same as for almost all other comps – TWO Prints OR TWO Projected Images, in any combination with a maximum of Two.
Secretary Wendy has checked the committee meeting minutes and confirmed that this was changed after questions were raised about some club rules a couple of months ago.
The changes appear not to have made it to the copy of the rules on the website, so apologies for that slip-up.
Entries for PIPY, or more fully, Projected Image and Print of the Year” competition must have been awarded Acceptance or Honours certificates, or have been selected as part of a Society entry in an Outside Competition during this competition year.
Provided you have filled out the “Award Received” column in your entry form after receiving awards, you only have to click in the “Image Title” column in the PIPY section to select those images eligible for entry.
This comp has an exception to the 2 entries rule. As this competition consists of the cream of your images throughout the year, you may enter a maximum of FOUR prints AND/OR FOUR projected images.
One other thing I’d like to mention is, as the year is coming to a close, a number of trophies and awards will be presented on final night, but for that to happen, those members who received the cups, shields etc last year will need to give them a good clean and polish before returning them to me as soon as you can please, NO LATER THAN THE NOVEMBER 2nd MEETING. I need to get the trophies to the engravers as early as possible to ensure I can get them back for final night!
You may drop them off to me at 44 Enverton Drive on the corner of Belgrave Drive Rangiora any time before Nov 2, just phone 310 6399 first to check someone is home.
See you soon.

July/August Informal Online competition
Richard Cooper has set the competition theme of St John images this time round.
Any photo of St John at work to celebrate their 125th anniversary. Photos of staff, services, etc are to be the main content.
Please don’t feel you have to take these photos from a patient’s eye view!
National Photojournalism Competition
New Brighton Photography Club run the annual Photojournalism Competition which is closing July 30 so it would pay to get your entries in asap.
This competition is open to all New Zealand residents, or financial members of PSNZ affiliated camera clubs.
Below is a link to the New Brighton PJ comp web page and another to the rules and entry form.

Urgent Call For Landscape Images
URGENT CALL
As mentioned at the meeting July 6, we are calling for your most stunning landscape photos to be considered for selection as RPS club entries in the PSNZ Bowron Landscape Digital Image Competition and George Chance Landscape Print Competition. Both competitions require four images so we’d like you to email your best two or three images to compsec ASAP THIS WEEK. Send them sized 1024 on long side for landscape format or 768 for portrait as usual. Once the images for the print set are chosen, we’ll ask for larger sized copies so we can print and mat them for the competition. I have just received notice of the closing date of August 6 which is why we need the images so soon as we have to select, print, mat and post the entries to arrive August 6.
RPS won the George Chance Print competition last year and wouldn’t it be great to match that!

Trenna Packer entries needed
Reminder about the PSNZ 2010 Trenna Packer Salver Natural History Competition for Projected Images
RPS is looking forward to selecting images for our Club entry in the Trenna Packer Salver Interclub Competition which closes in June. We would like you to sort through your best NATURAL HISTORY images or make some more and send TWO to the Competition Secretary no later than: Friday, 21st May, to be considered as part of the RPS entry.
The subject must be Natural history as defined by PSNZ…
“Natural History photography depicts living untamed animals and uncultivated plants in a natural habitat, geology and the wide diversity of natural phenomena, from insects to icebergs. This excludes anthropology and archaeology. Images of animals which are domesticated or caged or under any form of restraint, as well as cultivated plants, are ineligible. The subject must be there of its own volition and is free to come and go whether it be in a natural or adopted habitat. Naturalised subjects are allowable, providing that they are taken under natural, not domestic conditions. Examples of naturalised subjects are deer, black swan, monarch butterfly, briar (not cultivated) roses.”
The Nature Photography Society of New Zealand, who host this competition, require your images in the following format due to the requirements of their projector.
Your images should be saved as JPEG, sRGB colour space, resolution 72ppi with 1400 pixels on the horizontal side for landscape format and 1050 pixels on the vertical side for portrait format, and at a file size between 400Kb and 1Mb.
These are DIFFERENT formatting requirements than those used in RPS.
Please ask if you need help.
The file naming is the same format as for club competitions but using the code EX for External Competition. eg: 0123EX-slug.jpg
Email your images to the Competition Secretary no later than: Friday, 21st May.
Please take some time to sort through your best images and/or make some new ones, choose a maximum of 2, save them in the above format and get them to the compsec by the due date. It is really important to have a good selection to choose from as the six images we present as our entry must form a coherent set, and no more than one image is allowed from each photographer. We will be looking for a set of mixed subject matter.
Please don’t be concerned if your images are not chosen; we have to select a range of and this means a lot of excellent material that is submitted is not used. However, you may have just the image that the selection panel need to complete the set, so please send some images for the selection process.
